Profil Monitoring System (PMS)
The Profile Monitoring System is designed to measure the outline dimensions of trains. In addition to this, the system detects dangerous antennas on piggyback loaded trucks. Therefore the system helps to prevent damage to the rail network infrastructure e.g. tunnels and bridges.
The Profile Monitoring System uses laser scanners to generate a 3D profile of the railway wagons passing through the system. Wheel detector sensors on the track provide information on the train's speed and the length of individual railway wagons in the train.
Laser scanner technology prevents accidents
The data transformed into a 3D model of each train, enables the system to detect profile violations with reference to a maximum allowed profile at each position on the wagons. Small objects like antennas on HGV's (Heavy Goods Vehicles) in the critical zone near the catenary wire are detected by means of a laser light source and a high speed camera, which build a high speed, high precision light barrier above the train. The detection of a profile violation in a critical zone will cause an alert. The specially designed Train Viewer Software provides immediate surveillance.
Immediate localization of dangerous areas
Due to precise length tracking the violation is indicated with a mark on the 3D object. An additional overview camera with illumination can be installed for more detailed visual information.
System Benefits
Can be combined with Hot Box and Blocked Brake Detection
- The standard configuration consists of a two rail assembly with train viewer software.
- Combined with the ATLAS system, a centralized surveillance with several Profile Monitoring Systems is possible.
- The operational availability of the system is more than 98%. Various control and surveillance functions guarantee long maintenance cycles.
