MISTRAL – Professional System for Wind and Airstream MISTRAL Measurement

The sensors of MISTRAL are based on the physics of speed measurement by ultrasound. The wind measuring device deploys 2 pairs of transmitter and receiver to measure the speed of the wind as well as its direction. The sensor is adjusted exactly and maintains this position afterwards. The heatable sensing devices measure the variations in the sound signal and the deviations allow for precise calculation of wind speed and air temperature.

In contrast to previous wind meters no moving parts exist here (e.g. propeller); the system works without inertia and is therefore able to deliver precise measurements even at very low wind speed. No minimal airflow is necessary to move the sensors! Because of the absence of moving parts the problem of pollution or icing is no issue at all.

Best Performance and Longest Lifetime – without Moving Parts

The complete equipment, except the wind sensors, fits into an outdoor cabinet. The electronics is mounted in a separate EMC (electro - magnetic compatibility) compact cabinet (600 x 600 x 210 mm), which is installed in the outdoor cabinet.

The components for the 750 V supply are placed in an electrically isolated installation box (FIBOX). To cool the electronics cabinet, fans are placed into the space between the compact cabinet and the installation box. All electronic components are mounted on DIN rails to allow an easy installation and change.

Crosswinds – a Huge Danger on Bridges and Open Tracks

During a storm signals are set on stop very fast – a storm may affect rail traffic in a serious way. It is especially bad when a train is suddenly endangered by a squall. On bridges and open tracks you may face dangerous crosswinds. So it is necessary to be warned in time, to be informed about the danger ahead. For this purpose it is important to use a reliable system.

It has to supply correct information under every condition – in each kind of weather – to make it possible to protect life and goods. The application of the system in tunnels provides essential support to rescue teams. Especially in case of fire and toxic gases it is important to determine the precise direction of airflow.
